Colin at 11 months

Hard to believe, but Colin's been around almost a year! We had great fun watching him develop this month. He's losing many of his baby qualities and turning into a toddler right in front of our eyes!

The big news is that Colin can stand on his own. He doesn't really like to and if it happens, it's usually by accident and he corrects the situation as soon as possible. Typically, a pesky toy has distracted in him and in his haste to explore if more fully, he lets go of whatever support he's been clutching. Also, Colin's beginning to take a few more risks in transitioning from one support to another while creeping, letting go for just a second to the couch so he can get to the ottoman, for example. He is just beginning to tolerate being walked... Mom or Dad holding his hands up while he takes a few steps. He is happier to use some sort of outside toy - car, etc to push along, like here:

Colin has become a lot more playful in the last month. His favorite by far is peekaboo. He both likes to hide and seek, and often initiates the game with a blanket, piece of clothing, or curtain. He has shown a lot more interest in his books this past month. Not surprisingly, his favorite is called Baby Farm Animals Peekaboo! He also enjoys "Little Spider" and "The Very Hungry Frog," both of which have a place for the reader to put their finger in to make the spider move or the frog's eyes wiggle. He continues to love his rings and spindle, but his new favorite toy is the shape sorter. He's actually quite talented - he can get a cylinder as well square, triangle, and hexagonal prisms through a matching slot! His shape sorter is a hippopotamus that spits out the shapes when you pump a handle. Colin loves to bang on that handle but has trouble getting them out of the hippo's belly.

On the communication front, Colin babbles a ton. His teacher told me he says "oh no" but I have yet to hear it. Today I heard "go" over and over. He has learned the baby sign for "more" which he uses at the table, especially when he wants more puffs. It's clear he understands a lot more words, so we've been working a lot on asking him to find us certain items to see if he knows a word, like "car," 'ball," "cup," etc. He seems to understand a lot of words at the dinner table, like "cheese," "puffs," "applesauce," and "water."

Colin's big sister Anna is thriving, loving dance class, school, and playing with neighborhood friends. Her big accomplishment this month was learning to write her name. She writes a mean left-handed A-N-N-A! She practices daily at school and on her easel at home. She is beginning to recognize simple words in her books and guess what they spell with pretty decent accuracy (which is a combination of knowing the stories and guessing by her knowledge of the first letter). She loves to sing and dance and can't decide if she likes songs by Taylor Swift or Ernie better. She loves to play with her brother:

We had a visit from Pop-Pop this month which was well timed as Colin came down with a bad case of hand-foot-and-mouth disease and was out of daycare for a week! Then the stomach flu went through the house - uggh! We are all recuperated, however, and ready for Halloween! We've prepped with three pumpkin patches and an afternoon of early trick-or-treating. Colin the Lion and Anna the Ladybug say hello!
