Colin at 2 weeks

Well, it's been a hectic two weeks, but we are enjoying every minute! Colin is starting to be awake for longer periods and is getting used to his new surroundings.  Mommy and Daddy are getting used to waking up a few times each night.  Anna is enamored with her new baby brother who she today referred to as "my friend that I can talk to."  So sweet!  We were able to squeeze in a visit to Santa Claus and Anna asked for a dollhouse and a hula hoop.  She also asked him to bring Colin a jack-in-the-box (her choice for him!)  Grandma and Grandpa Perone departed Saturday after a two-week stay to help us settle in with our new addition.

Luckily the weather is still pleasant here so we are enjoying daily walks around the Stanford campus.  Tomorrow we head in for a two week doctor's checkup and of course, a weigh-in.  We are totally in love with the new addition to our family.  Click on the picture to see what we've been up to!

Fall and Halloween

We've had a wonderful fall here on the Stanford campus.  The weather is amazing and we are constantly meeting new friends!  Anna began preschool in late August.  We ended up switching her six weeks in when we were able to get a spot at an on-campus school, which she started in mid October.  She loves her teachers and friends!

Anna is anxiously awaiting the birth of her baby brother.  She practices rocking babies, pushing them in strollers, and changing their diapers.  Hopefully she will be just as interested when he arrives!

Somersault!

Anna has learned how to do a somersault!  This video was taken the first night Anna was put to bed in her "big girl room."  Without a crib and changing table in the way, I guess there's room for tumbling!

Anna at the Stanford Game!

Anna cheered Stanford on to a win against San Jose state at the season opener.  She loved the noise, the music, and most of all the flags that the cheerleaders were waving each time Stanford scored. Check out the video!

Anna's first bike ride

Anna's first time out on her new balance bike!

Anna is 2 years old!

It is difficult to believe that two years have passed since Anna arrived, and yet when I look back at the thousands of pictures we've taken, it's hard to believe that so much has happened in that relatively short amount of time! Anna is thrilled to FINALLY be two years old... we've been talking about it for ages now!

The summer has been a wonderful chance for Brian and me to spend an immense amount of time with Anna. Brian's workload was light for the summer so we had lots of family walks and afternoons at the playground. We purchased a bike trailer so Anna could ride along with Brian, and even Mommy was convinced to join in on the family bike rides (occasionally). We were happy to host all of the Perones for the Fourth of July and celebrate Anna's cousin Logan's birthday in California. Anna continued to enjoy swimming opportunities over the past few months – she has absolutely no fear of the water and laughs at her poor mother who gets so stressed out when she immerses herself in it over and over again. Although very wary of sand when we first moved here, Anna has embraced the many sand-bottomed playgrounds here at Stanford and has the opportunity most days to fill and spill pails and dump trucks with sand. Let's just say I've never vacuumed so much in my life! Anna has some regular playmates in our neighborhood and has been learning a lot about cooperation and waiting one's turn.

Anna got to travel back east this summer for a long visit with Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop. It was her first plane ride with just one parent to amuse her, but she did a great job and did not bother the other passengers too much :) While in Philadelphia, she got to visit a fire station with Pop-Pop – a highlight of the trip. We also took a trip to Sesame Place, where we got to meet some of Anna's favorite characters: Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Zoe and the Count! We were able to meet up with lots of family members, most notably new cousin Nicholas.

On the developmental front, Anna's speech continues to develop at an amazing pace. Her sentences stretch to seven, eight or more words. She is still sorting out those pesky pronouns but has definitely made some progress. She has learned all of her consonant sounds (b says bah, for example) and we're working on differentiating vowel sounds, which are a little trickier. She occasionally gets to use the iPad; we've found some great apps that coach spelling simple words like “cat,” etc. It is amazing to watch a not-quite-two-year-old drag letters into the correct order to spell words! We are in close proximity to two libraries which we've visited quite often this summer. Anna loves getting new books each week and Mommy and Daddy are pretty excited about the variety as well! By the end of the week Anna is able to “read” the simpler books from memory – amazing! Physically, Anna has made some strides as well. She has mastered stair climbing which she had a late start on – our new two-story place got her trained very quickly. She loves walking backwards these days (usually an attempt to get Mommy or Daddy to chase her). Her climbing skills scare her mother and father half-to-death but certainly are impressive.

We are working on two important milestones right now: sleeping in a big girl bed and potty-training! Brian converted Anna's crib to a toddler bed this week. It's going pretty well but she is definitely exploring some new found freedoms that go with the loss of a crib. On the potty-training front, there is not too much to report other than Anna is very interested in it and is a pretty good sport about “trying” to go. Hopefully we'll have some more successful attempts soon.

This is Anna's last week of summer before she starts preschool! She will begin at The Roberts School next Monday. We had a play date there a few weeks ago and she did wonderfully. She warmed right up to her teacher and the other kids, even though most of them were about to move up to the 3 year old room. Anna will be the youngest in her class, but the teacher feels she will be able to keep up with the other students. They have a gymnastics program there once a week so Anna will be thrilled to take that up again.

Anna's 2nd Birthday was celebrated quietly today with just Mom and Dad and some cupcakes. Grandma Jean arrives tomorrow and over the weekend we will have more of a celebration. She's received many generous gifts from her family members, but the “big” present from her parents was a bicycle! After some research we decided to go with a balance bike which will likely prevent training wheels from being necessary later.

We are so happy to have such a inquisitive, bright-eyed daughter who constantly makes us smile with her incessant singing, silly antics, and playful nature. She is a loving little girl who is going to make a wonderful big sister. She has been diligently preparing for her baby brother's arrival by mothering her favorite new doll, Luke, with whom she is, quite frankly, obsessed. Our lives have been blessed the last two years, and we are so grateful we have so many more years ahead on our journey with Anna!

Anna at 22 Months

What a crazy two months it's been! The pictures this post begin with Easter morning.  An excited Anna knew all about the Easter bunny and was a great sport on an Easter Egg Hunt. Hopefully, you saw the video from the last post.

Most of our time has been dedicated to preparing for our move to Stanford. All family members had to depart familiar territory for new adventures. Brian and Karen left their jobs in Sacramento, and we had a tearful goodbye to the lovely ladies at Land Park Infant Care & Preschool where Anna has been the last year and a half. We did our best to enjoy our favorite haunts in Sacramento these last few weeks, but we also got around to doing a few new things. Anna's favorite was a steam train ride out of Old Sacramento. Although the packing up of the house was a little confusing for Anna, she did seem to enjoy seeing all her old "baby toys" as we packed up.  It was fun to watch her play pretend with her stuffed animals, putting them in the swings or car seats and buckling them up. We got help from Grandpa and Grandma Barb with packing and our rained out yard sale which turned in to a true garage sale.

We moved to the Stanford campus this weekend with the help of Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop, who were able to catch the birth of Anna's cousin Nicholas right before they left. Good timing, Nick! Anna got to hang out poolside at their hotel while Mommy and Daddy dealt with the details of the move. So far everything has gone smoothly and we are settling in nicely. We were assigned a well-placed unit right between two of many playgrounds - one for every courtyard. We've counted ten so far but we still haven't found them all! Anna is in heaven. There are kids everywhere and lots of toys around that everyone shares very willingly. She's happy to meet and play with the other children.

Developmentally, Anna continues to impress us.  She regularly speaks in five to six word sentences.  Our focus right now is getting her to use first person pronouns instead of second person.  You'll hear her say, "Do you want some milk, Anna?" and we have her repeat the request with an "I."  She's learning more and more songs and will sing them for hours.  Currently she's into "Baa Baa, Black Sheep."  She can identify uppercase letters with no problem and most of the lowercase letters.  She can also tell you a word that begins with each letter from memory. She's become more adept at throwing a ball overhand, but we are still working on catching!  Playing pretend is the current obsession. She has figured out how to connect the clips on her stroller/car seat/high chair, so she loves to strap in her dolls and stuffed animals. She also likes to pretend to change their diapers. A big challenge has been moving into a two-story place!  Anna did not have to deal with steps at our old house. She's making progress but we ran out and bought baby gates for the first time - she has no fear when sometimes when she should!

It's shaping up to be a great summer with lots of new friends and experiences, so stay tuned. Additionally, in case you haven't heard, Anna will be a BIG SISTER come December!  Click on the picture below to see what we've been up to:

Anna at 20 months

Well, it's been two months between postings, and I'm feeling a little guilty about that.  But, our lives have sure been hectic lately. We have big news - we are moving and starting on new adventures!  Brian has been accepted to a doctoral program at Stanford University. We will be renting our house and moving to an apartment in the family housing there. I have found a new position at a Catholic high school near campus where I will both teach math and coordinate service learning efforts. We are really excited about the changes!

Anna seems oblivious to it all and is just enjoying life as usual. She is growing like a weed and talking up a storm. She has grown impatient with "baby" books and prefers longer stories with more involved plots (which is oh-so-refreshing for us as narrators.) She frequently communicates in three to four word sentences and sings full songs constantly. Currently her favorite is "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. The most common phrase we hear is "Anna do it self;" she has quite the independent streak! From brushing her teeth to dressing/undressing herself, she always makes an effort to attempt it in her own way before she will allow you to help. She is working on her dexterity with writing instruments and now enjoys coloring and drawing on her chalkboard. Anna has an increased interest in dolls and playing pretend. At night after she is put in her crib, you can hear her telling her dolly to lie down and watch her use a blanket to tuck the dolly in.

We've enjoyed a few visits these past few months. Pop-Pop came out in March to watch Anna for a few days while her daycare was closed. They had a wonderful time together. This week Grandpa and Grandma Barb came out to watch Anna for a few days while Mommy and Daddy enjoyed a getaway in Sonoma. They will be here with us to celebrate Easter as well. Anna got to dye her first Easter eggs last night, including the application of some glitter which went surprisingly well.

Take a look at our recent adventures by clicking on the TWO albums below - one for 19 months and the second for 20 months.

Anna at 18 Months

WOW!  How time flies. Our little girl is now one and half, or, as we have been teaching her to say:  "1.5."

Anna's becoming ever more mobile and climbs EVERYTHING.  Chairs, shelves, whatever will stay still long enough.  There's been a whole new round of childproofing at our house trying to keep up with her.  She's even managed to climb into her high chair by herself.  I suppose those gymnastics classes are contributing to this... oops!  One of her favorite activities is climbing onto the bench in our living room and looking out the window. She finds it amusing to pull the curtains back and look to see if Daddy is home from work yet.

Anna's speech develops at lightning speed.  It's amazing how much she picks up!  She has begun repeating almost everything we see (which has, on occasion, included an inappropriate word that has slipped out of our mouths!)  She regularly strings two or three words together to indicate what she wants:  "yogurt down," "bear up," etc.  She has also begun using the pronoun "I" appropriately with adjectives: "I tired" or "I cute."  (This despite Elmo's best efforts to force her to speak in the third person only.)   She loves practicing her singing.  She can sing nearly complete versions of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," the Alphabet Song, and "Row Row Row Your Boat," without any help!  She is able to participate well in "The Wheels on the Bus" and "Old MacDonald."  She can also count to twelve on her own and all the way to twenty with a little help (she gets some of those -teen numbers confused).

We continue our near daily walks, but many days we allow Anna to walk the last block home.  She loves it!  Nearly every day on our ride home from daycare Anna requests a "wagon walk."  Anna shows a growing ability to recall events from hours or days prior.  A highlight this month was a friend's birthday (David) that she still can't stop talking about.  This morning when I wished her "Happy Half Birthday," she immediately began babbling about David.  Another example:  We had friends over for dinner on Sunday evening.  On Tuesday night, Anna walked over to the chair our friend Nassim sat in and said, "Nassim!"

Along with all these great developments, we are seeing a few of those tantrums that we hear are pretty normal between 18 and 24 months.  Although they are no fun, Anna's emerging personality and ability to communicate make it all worth it.

Anna at 17 months

It may be the middle of January, but Anna is getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine here in California! We've been blessed with some lovely weather so our daily walks are back in session. Only now, thanks to Santa Claus, we have a wagon to cruise around in! Of course, this means that Anna is no longer a big fan of her stroller that we need for our longer walks... oh well!

We are having a great 2011 so far... hard to believe this is the third calendar year in which Anna has lived!  Anna continues to progress with her language development. She now regularly strings two, sometimes three words together to express a thought... usually her ownership over everything... "Anna's shoes," "Anna's hat," "Anna's Elmo," etc. But she is also able to indicate things that belong to Mommy or Daddy as well as combine the words "more" and "please" to whatever she desires. She can now count to ten and sing portions of the alphabet song (see the video Brian posted below).  At last count, she can recognize and say 20 out of the 26 letters in the alphabet when shown the figure! We read lots of books every night and work with her to improve that ever-expanding vocabulary. Her favorite word this week is "excited" (which she pronounces "cited"); today she told me she was "cited" while waiting for me to get the wagon out of the garage.

Anna is also becoming more musical. I learned this month that if I stopped in the middle of a line of a song I was singing, Anna could finish the line nearly every time! I tried it with dozens of songs I've been singing to her and it was wonderful to see how much she'd been picking up all this time. She now tries to initiate songs, particularly the alphabet song, "Row Row Row Your Boat," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." For Christmas, she received a toy CD player that plays Sesame Street songs and she loves to dance to the songs, switching out the CD's dozens of times a sitting. She just can't seem to get enough of "C is for Cookie."

Anna's mobility also continues to improve. She's begun running away and hiding whenever it's time for a diaper change, bath, or toothbrushing. She giggles like crazy while we run all over the house trying to catch her. Gymnastics class has introduced her to climbing so we are noticing more of that around the house and will have to consider another round of childproofing.

Christmas 2010

Christmas was busy (which partially explains the timing of this post). We started with a visit from Grandpa Pat and Grandma Barb in mid-December, then traveled back east to both Ellicott City and Philadelphia to see Grandma Jean and Grandpa Dick and Mom-mom and Pop-pop. So Anna racked up four Christmases, plus celebrations at daycare to top it all off. Needless to say, she got more presents than she (or we) know what to do with! Highlights include a red wagon, a "fur-real" kitten (not real, just animatronic), Memory, several puzzles, clothes, and most of the cast of Sesame Street. Anna loves all of her presents, and tries to play with them all at once, usually by sitting in her wagon surrounded by toys and books. She's gotten a little too big to sit still on the long flights back, but she was a good traveler nonetheless. We had a great time seeing everyone!

Anna at 16 months

Well, clearly this post is late, but with our holiday travel we weren't able to get Anna's 16 month update on time.

Thanksgiving was a laid back affair with our friends Tommy and Nassim joining us for dinner at our place.  We missed our families but appreciated the relaxation of a holiday with no air travel.

It was a hectic month with preparing for the holidays, but we managed to get Anna signed up for a gymnastics class which she loves! Every Saturday morning she gets to jump around the gym with one or both her parents.  Make sure to check out the video of her on the trampoline on the previous post! She is also able to swing from the bars and walk on the balance beam, and of course ride the slide into a pit of foam blocks. Mom and Dad are only sorry that adults aren't permitted on any of the apparatuses.  Anna is also learning how to play tee-ball!  Dad couldn't resist playing Santa a bit early and has Anna working on her swing already - check out the pics!

Right now Anna is crazy over puzzles - luckily we have dozens for her to work on. The latest hand-me-downs we've received from friends include puzzles with sound - when you put in the piece it makes a corresponding noise.  Most of our friends had boys so lately it's been lots of planes, trains and automobiles.  Anna loves them all - the other day she even was able to say a pretty decent version of "ambulance!" Anna's language grows by leaps and bounds.   She learns at least one or two words each day, sometimes more.  She is eager to repeat anything she hears so we definitely have to be careful about what we say.  Mom and Dad are in the spelling stage for sure! (What time do you want to give Anna her B-A-T-H?  Can you stop by the store and get some more M-I-L-K?)  I fear it is only a matter of time before she picks up on these spellings.

In preparation for the holiday we made sure to visit Santa Claus, so be sure to look for that picture in this month's collection.  We were lucky enough to have a visit from Grandpa and Grandma Perone this month and they came along for the visit to Santa.  You'll also see Santa's early visit to our house before he came to see Anna again on the east coast.  Click on the picture below!
